As the only organization specifically dedicated to advancing Indian Country tourism across the United States, the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association (AIANTA) serves as the voice and resource for tribes and tribal organizations engaged in cultural tourism. 

AIANTA helps tribes develop, sustain, and grow tourism destinations through technical assistance, training and educational resources.

Working on behalf of all 567 federally recognized tribes and Native Hawaiians, AIANTA supports and promotes authentic Indian Country tourism.  We provide technical assistance, training, and resources to tribes, and work hard to make sure that tribal tourism has a voice at the national level.

Tribal Agritourism Marketing Tools, Part 1: Using New Media to Control the Message
This webinar will provide an understanding of how best to share the history and stories of your unique tribal agritourism product utilizing new media and contemporary communications strategies as your marketing tool. We will cover the strategic and critical role that marketing plays in cultural tourism development and introduce basic communications techniques that can help to effectively raise awareness and sell a new or existing product or destination. We’ll identify effective marketing and outreach strategies for agritourism and cultural-tourism businesses and destinations, while also covering how to link your tourism product to relevant markets.

Presenter:

Rachel Cromer Howard, Public Relations and Media Specialist, AIANTA (American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association)

Rachel is a public relations and strategic communications specialist with extensive experience in the cultural tourism industry, both nationally and globally. Currently managing the public outreach and communications department at the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association, Rachel also has become an integral part of the association’s international outreach program. She got her start at a television station in New Mexico, where she worked as a production and promotions producer and expanded her knowledge and expertise on media and storytelling. Rachel studied mass communication and journalism at the University of New Mexico and is in the process of completing the Cultural Heritage Certificate Program through George Washington University. Upon graduation, Rachel quickly proceeded into the fast-paced world of public relations. Working at a national PR firm, Rachel gained valuable experience in a vast range of industries and areas – including Indian Country. Now, through her work at AIANTA, she has garnered hundreds of millions of earned-media impressions for AIANTA, and has helped bring Indian Country tourism into new international markets around the globe. She brings her practical, working knowledge with tribes and the tourism industry, and how to work effectively through collaborations and partnerships.

Guest Speaker:

Paige Williams Shepherd joined the Chickasaw Nation in October 2008 as the director of tourism for the Department of Commerce. Currently Paige serves as the director of corporate development and tourism. Paige’s primary responsibility is corporate development as a means for tourism development and the planning, development, management and operation of tourism for the Chickasaw Nation. Under the tourism umbrella, Paige oversees Chickasaw Country, the travel and tourism destination representing over 7,600 square miles of culture, nature, recreation and entertainment located in south-central Oklahoma. She will focus on successful marketing campaigns promoting Chickasaw County as a top Native American tourism destination. Through social media, digital and traditional marketing, Paige will highlight successful campaigns and strategies for promoting authentic experiences that deliver engagement and a return on investment.

Learn about the only consumer-facing destination website dedicated to promoting cultural tourism in Indian Country – NativeAmerica.travel. This webinar will give instruction on how tribes, tribal cultural tourism programs and tribal businesses – including tribal agritourism programs and products – can showcase their products on the website without charge (due to a partnership with AIANTA and the Bureau of Indian Affairs).

This session will cover and provide our partners with skills:

  • To integrate your tourism products within the website to help market to the world
  • To understand the destination website and its capabilities on a level in which to promote easily
  • To learn new tourism tools that you can bring back to your community and your communities tourism planning departments
  • To define economic development according to how your community operates and how agritourism plays a part in that economic development plan

Guest Speaker:

Alger Swingley is the founder of Blackfeet Outfitters and is an enrolled member of the Blackfeet Tribe. Alger is the first Native American full-service hunting, fishing and packing outfitter to be licensed in Montana.  Alger will talk about his marketing strategy and his experience with working with NativeAmerica.travel.
