The American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association (AIANTA) is seeking an energetic, well-organized self-starter to serve as Marketing Director. This is a competitive recruitment, open to all qualified applicants.

Position Summary

This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and provides leadership and management that support the achievements of AIANTA’s overall mission, strategy and business plans through marketing. The director is responsible for the creation and execution of AIANTA’s marketing plans which include market and business development, global media and travel trade, strategic plans and consumer marketing activities. As a member of the Executive Team, the Director of Marketing supports and assists in the identification and execution of partnerships with key tourism industry partners to support the organization’s overall goals and strategic plans to meet AIANTA’s short-term and long-term goals and objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Creative Development

  • Lead, develop and execute AIANTA’s annual marketing plan, working closely with AIANTA’s Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors and partners and all members of the AIANTA Team.
  • Oversees the creative development and execution of AIANTA’s marketing campaigns.
  • Work with AIANTA team to develop marketing and consumer communications initiatives which support marketing and outreach goals of the organization.
  • Work with staff and other consultants on programs to support the promotion of market-ready and export-ready products and programs.
  • Oversees consumer and brand awareness of the organization.
  • Oversees the development and growth of AIANTA’s web and social media presence.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Leadership & Management

  • Manage, measure and grow marketing team to ensure successful delivery of core marketing initiatives. This may include delivering travel media, social media management, communications, marketing, website design and development, and creative design activities.
  • Leads project staff and contractors, leads by example, and effectively manages, guides and directs staff to accomplish project goals and objectives.
  • Creates an open and supportive staff environment by clearly defining their respective duties, establishing performance standards and conducting performance reviews.
  • Recruits, guides and manages all direct staff reports. Ensure staff receives clear direction, supervision and motivation, and are provided with training, tools and technology required to do their jobs, consistent with the goals and objectives of AIANTA. Evaluates staff performance and guides staff to maintain and improve their performance.
  • Ensures all contractors are effectively fulfilling services as outlined in their respective business agreements with AIANTA.
  • Delivers monthly, quarterly and annual marketing reports.

Partnerships & Performance

  • Manages and fosters strong relationships for collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to support AIANTA’s key messages to be included in their marketing efforts
  • Works with external stakeholders to build joint marketing initiatives such as travel trade and travel media FAM tours and cooperative campaigns.
  • Develops strategic partnerships with receptive tour operator, tour operators, travel agents and other third-party distribution channels in key and emerging markets to grow Native American cultural tourism experience inclusions in itineraries and in publications.
  • Supports implementation of the American Indian Tourism Conference (AITC) and other events and program activities as required to support participation and support.

Sales Activities

  • Creates and conducts familiarization tours, story concepts, media events, sales missions and promotional materials which promote Native American cultural tourism and AIANTA’s stakeholders.
  • Represents AIANTA at meetings, conferences and workshops to expand knowledge and stay informed of the changes in the tourism industry, keeping foremost AIANTA’s vision, mission and values.
  • Represents AIANTA and its market / export-ready members at industry events, marketplaces and trade shows.
  • Develops a thorough understanding of the current cultural tourism experiences offered across the United States and supports outreach, technical assistance and training to grow Native American cultural tourism.
  • Supports internal managers and staff to explore opportunities to support the development of cultural tourism experiences within American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Nations and communities.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Facilitate research and reporting to deliver information on the ongoing growth, success and effectiveness of AIANTA’s marketing efforts.
  • Communicates to the Chief Executive Officer on a timely basis, any material matters affecting the marketing planning and execution.

Finance and Budgets

  • Works with the Chief Executive Officer and with the accountants to develop the marketing budget, reviews operational performance against the budget, and brings important financial issues to the CEO’s attention in a timely way.
  • Ensure all project spending is within the agreed budgets and timelines.

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Requirements

  • Requires Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of seven years’ work experience in communications, tourism marketing and/or international market development leadership role. Must understand capacity building processes, procedures and challenges for American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian businesses and communities. Must possess excellent oral and written communications skills, including proposal writing, public speaking and presentation skills. Must be a good collaborator and self-motivated with the ability to work effectively independently. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience working with a Native American organization, travel and tourism business and/or a not-for-profit organization.


  • Bachelor’s degree education in Marketing, Business, Tourism or a related field.

Relevant Experience

  • Knowledge of American Indian, Alaska Native and/or Native Hawaiian Nations and/or communities, businesses and/or organizations.
  • Experience in working with non-profit organizations.
  • Relevant marketing experience.
  • Digital Media experience.
  • Familiarity with Social Media Platforms.
  • Tourism data tracking and management.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong public relation skills and effective at developing and maintaining business relationships.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including proposal writing, public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Website content development and updated experience and abilities.
  • Knowledge of international travel trade and primary distribution channels and the ability to establish B2B relationships to leverage third party channels.
  • Must be knowledgeable in Windows 365, Constant Contact, Wild Apricot (or similar membership software), virtual platforms (like Zoom) and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).
  • Excellent technology skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks. • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to travel.
